I finally saw the gorillas (including the baby), giraffes and jaguar. I did't get a good picture of the jaguar because it was pacing quickly and kids kept running into the pictures .... oh well. Oh yeah, I set my ISO to 1600 to shoot the gorillas and forgot the lower it for the rest of the day. I feel like a noob for that and it shows in the pictures, but fortunately the polarizer was able to salvage some of the pictures.
Saw a nice sunset today.

Sunset 3
Originally uploaded by jonketo
Fortunately I had my camera so I snapped a few pics. Here is how it went:

‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:00 PM]:
Shuttle driver had some crazy stories.
‎‎Jesse Robbins (MAQ Software)‎‎ [1:00 PM]:
like what?
‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:00 PM]:
Stories about building missles for cold war
‎‎Jesse Robbins (MAQ Software)‎‎ [1:00 PM]:
wtf?
kind of a random story, who initiated that"
‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:01 PM]:
Here is the conversation:
as we are pulling around the back of building
driver says, wish they would chop down the old firs, they are dead
me, it's hard to chop down trees around here
driver, yeah, you would write an evironmental impact statement
driver continues, i had to do that when i was down in the southwest
we were designing missle trucks that had to withstand collisions with cactuses
we spent 3 months writing environmental impact statements
he continued to talk about the hundreds of missles they had on all the trucks, the nuclear subs and the underground trains with missles.
‎‎Jesse Robbins (MAQ Software)‎‎ [1:03 PM]:
wait...missle trucks that could withstand collisions with cacti?
‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:03 PM]:
yeah
I am guessing, so if they needed to shoot missles at Russia these things could make a bee-line to the firing location as fast as possible
‎‎Jesse Robbins (MAQ Software)‎‎ [1:04 PM]:
ah...but from where?
‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:04 PM]:
the southwest, los alamos
‎‎Jesse Robbins (MAQ Software)‎‎ [1:04 PM]:
because places with Cacti and Russia are kinda far
that's one long ass range missle
‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:05 PM]:
yeah, I wanted to make a smart ass comment about the army being ready for the war in russia that would take place in the desert.
During the ride, the driver picked up one of the little microsoft notebooks and said, I got it all right here in my autobiography.
‎‎Jesse Robbins (MAQ Software)‎‎ [1:06 PM]:
huh?
he's off his rocker
or the next best seller
‎‎Jon Keto (Avanade)‎‎ [1:06 PM]:
He is writing about the time before the second world war when everyone was united in support of the war
kids would take aluminum from gum wrappers and cigarette packages and recycle with their moms pots and pans.
Left over fat would be taken to the grocery store and turned into nitoglycerin
He said a store in west seattle had some many coming with fat they had to put up a sign to turn them away
it said "Women, don't bring your fat cans in here"

Schmapped!

One of the photos I took on my trip to New York was put into a new online Travel Guide. I had a sequence of shots of Roger on Ironman Traverse, so I put them together. I did not do a good job of shooting for the sequence. Next time I will have to pay more attention to making the photos food for a sequence. I still think it was fun to try with these photos because of the shadows and I wanted to remove the three other people in the shot. I also posted the originals in the photoshop collection.

... time for bed.
Panoramas Recreated

 Empire State Building
Originally uploaded by jonketo
I recreated my panoramas this weekend and put them in their own gallery. I was fortunate to spend some time on North Mountain at the Mushroom Boulder. I say 'fortunate' because halfway through the trip the park closed Mushroom Boulder indefinitely to all activities (including bouldering). I didn't have enough time to project Mushroom Roof, but I did enjoy the climb before the restriction. Often touted as the best boulder in North America, Mushroom Boulder is certainly a destination in and of itself with the number of varied climb on all sides. I am happy that I got to see my friends finish their projects of Mushroom Tea and Mushroom Roof and I can only hope the boulder is open to climbing in the future.

The boulder was closed because foot traffic and crash pads had cause a noticable amount of damage to the soil and plant life surrounding the boulder. In order to protect the vegetation and cultural deposits underneath Mushroom Roof the boulder had to be closed. This is certainly an understandable situation that we have to respect as climbers, but it is certainly tough to lose some of the classic climbs that existed on that boulder.

Mushroom Boulder Links:
Mountain Project page on Mushroom Boulder
Flickr Search of Mushroom Boulder
Google Images Search of Mushroom Boulder
Google Search of Mushroom Boulder

Links regarding closure: [EDIT 1/10/2008]
http://www.rockandice.com/inthemag.php?id=104&type=onlinenews
http://www.abc-of-rockclimbing.com/news/200801/mushroom-boulder-at-hueco-tanks-closed.asp
http://www.accessfund.org/display/page/PR/87
http://www.seclimbers.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=91693
http://climbingvideos.blogspot.com/2008/01/huecos-mushroom-boulder-closed-for-good.html

Honda CBR

 Honda CBR
Originally uploaded by jonketo
I got invited to the Seattle Motorcyle Show this morning.
