Back in the 206

Sandra and I got back to Seattle this Sunday. We had a very exhausting, yet fun, whirlwind tour of the west coast. We went to San Diego, San Francisco, Yosemite and Ocean Shores. Thanks to Jean, Chris, Eric, Jentzen and Rich for all the help with how to get places and telling us where to visit.

Some of the few things to remember were the bug bites from Yosemite, the lady in China town tried to make me buy a ring with Sandra and the Korean lady in Ocean who sold us coffee. I guess doing doughnuts on the beach in Ocean Shores was fun too. Oh yeah, I won't forget the 12 days of Christmas either. Someone in the car decided to break out in American Idolesque fashion and sing this song. I won't say who it was.

As for all the pictures. I have not quite uploaded them yet. I may have lost the USB cable for my camera, so I haven't been able to upload the photos. Tonight my brother and I are going to Kagan's house .... errr .... shanty to help him put up insulation, so maybe I will use his cable to get the photos onto my computer.

Things here have been pretty nice. I have been trying to keep up on the exercise tip. Yesterday I ran 5 miles in the morning, then went on a bike ride in the afternoon and in the evening I went rock climbing. This morning I was certainly feeling it. I might go running this evening just to keep up the habit.

The next post will include photos from the trip.

Our vacation is starting

Sandra got into town last night. I am happy about that. It is really nice to see her after 5 weeks of being down here. We are going to start our vacation today. We will spend one day here in San Clemente before starting the drive north. I hope I can do a little blogging on the way.

Worked Late Last Night

I worked on render farm software until late last night. Then helped Jentzen learn the XML DOM. It went something like this:

I realized I lost my keys, so I couldn't get into the apartment, so I slept at work. Man, is my life glamorous or what?

Vacation!

So the last week or so has been pretty good. There have been some changes at work since some important people have left. This has gotten me to do a little work in R&D with Adam, which I am super stoked about. I have also had a chance to get together with another UW CS student, Micheal Beal, and work on some render farm management software. I am finally getting to do some technical programming and analyze how to optimize databases. I think sometimes I would be more effective if my job satisfaction was raised. It seems to be working right now.

For the past two months Chris Evans and I have been running at lunch. He said to everyone in the TD group, "I want to go running, I just need someone to run with.". I responded saying that I would go and then he laughed. He laughed because he thought I would not want to run with him because he was too slow. I have to hand it to him though. We start running 3 miles each afternoon in over 35 minutes. Now in about the same amount of time we are running nearly 4.5 miles. Chris has definitely improved and it has been fun to watch him do so. I think it helps his energy level and mood. The other great thing about running each day is that we have slowly got other people to run with us. Originally it was only the two of us, but some days we have up to 5 or 6 people. I hope people keep this up because it is a great way to break up they day and stay in shape.

Next week is going to be great. I start my vacation on Friday and will have two weeks off. I plan to spend the first half with Sandra driving back to Seattle. We plan on going to the San Diego Zoo and then we will drive up to San Francisco for a few days. The most important thing on the list of things to do is to eat dim sum. After San Franciso we will head towards Yosemite. There will do lots of hiking and I hope to get some bouldering in. I hope to take some nice photos that I can share with my dad. In high my brother dad and I drove up the coast California from Mexico and we took a lot of photos. Unfortunately they were lost in a hard drive crash, so I hope to take some of the photos we lost again. I think that will be a nice gift for him.

Once in Seattle I will get help Kagan and Eric fix up Kagan's place. According to Eric, they left me a lot of work to do. All I have to say is there better be some cycling and rock climbing in the schedule too. I promised Chris I would run everyday, so I can't forget to do that. Otherwise he will be setting the pace when I get back.

Some other notable events that have occurred recently. I got a new cell phone. Apparently it is not featured on the US LG site, but it is on Canada's .... weird. Last night I lost my keys when I left work at 1:30 am. I got home and had to knock on the door and call my roommate to get let in. I hope someone at work finds my lost keys. Steven met some nice kalifornia gurls. Alissa is in Hong Kong getting a masters in Linguistics. Tammy is going to get married soon. Oh yeah, I also want a digital SLR camera. And lastly, I should probably shave one of these days because the MOCAP cave is turning me into a hermit.

Chaotic

This fourth of July weekend was great. I don't think I could have asked for a funner weekend down here in San Clemente. Originally I was planning on going home and surprising Sandra, but she had decided to go to Yosemite National Park with Jason, Vince and others. I think this was better anyways. I think it was a lot more fun for her to go, so staying down here was better.

This weekend was a chaotic combination of spending the final days with people who are leaving Omation and going on to do other things as well as celebrating the fourth of July.

It all started on Friday when Helge, Matt and I went to the bar to play some foosball. Since their were three of us we needed to pick up other players. We ended picking up one guy who had already drank too much and was getting aggressive, so when he teamed up with his girlfriend all he did was get upset at her because they were not winning. It was pretty pathetic, so I stopped trying because I didn't want to be responsible for this guy being a jerk. Later in the night we invited her to play with us, without her boyfriend, and she had a great time, so I think he was super pissed off about that. I think people take these games too seriously and they can't enjoy them no matter what. After the foosball died out we headed to a friend's house to continue drinking. The only problem was that we didn't have anything to drink, so we had to go to the secret gas station that sells alcohol after hours if you pay cash. We got back with more beer and kept the night going until about 4 in the morning. That is when Helge and I walked up the hill back to Omation, so we could pick up our cars and head home.

On Saturday I didn't do much until the afternoon. In a last effort to go to the beach before Helge left for Gerymany, we both went to go boogy boarding at trails. The waves were the worst I had ever seen them. They were super small and didn't break until right near the beach. This was a little dangerous because of the rocks, so we had to be super careful not to hurt ourselves either. After about an hour we had enough of it and headed back home.

Saturday evening I went to see War of the Worlds with Jean since we seemed to be the only two people who had not seem the movie yet. The movie was pretty ridiculous, but at the same time it was pretty well done. I know that some people say the ending was bad and more things needed to be explained, but I am talking the effectiveness in portraying the horror of having a huge robot come out of the ground in your neighborhood and just start vaporizing everything around you. I also though the struggle that Tom Cruise had to have with himself when he realized that he actually was a horrible parent was critical to adding the human element to the film.

Sunday was another slow day. It started out with a trip to Starbucks and did not consist of much else until the early evening when we headed back to Chris' house for a little barbeque. It was a small little shindig, so people could see Helge before he left. We ate some great deck dogs that Chris had managed to drop on his porch. The last moment something could have happened it did. After we had our share of food and beers we headed down to the beach to take over someone's bonfire. Oddly enough, when we got down to the pier, no one was on the beach, so getting a fire pit was quite easy. The attraction of the night seemed to be the phosphorescent creatures in the water and on the sand. Whenever they were agitated they would glow, so we would just sit on the beach and watch the waves. We also rubbed our hands through the sand to get them to glow. It was almost mesmerizing how they would react, so it was no wonder Liz spent so much time playing with them. Again, I didn't get home until early in the morning.

For some odd reason no matter how late I have been getting home, I have still been getting up early. This was nice on Monday because it gave me plenty of time to ride my bike back down to Chris', so I could pick up the rental car. The ride helped me wake up without a big hangover, so I was pleased. In the afternoon I hung out with Helge and we bought some DVDs. He taught me about HDRI and then we watched a movie. We watched "The Life Aquatic". It was done by Wes Craven, the same guy who created "The Royal Tenenbaums", so it had a very similar feel. I thought it was really great and if you liked the "Royal Tenenbaums" then you should watch this movie.

After the movie I met Jean and Paola at their apartment. We planned to watch the fireworks down at the beach with some of their friends from Dreamworks. They made a great picnic dinner for us to eat at the beach that we snacked on until the fireworks show. I must say that this show was not as good as the ones I have seen in Seattle, but it was still pretty nice. I think it was also because this 4th of July is special because it is not in Seattle. After the fireworks show we decided to watch some DVDs. One DVD turned into two and so on. I didn't get to bed until 5:30 this morning, but it was worth it. I watched an interesting Chinese movie called Dumplings. If you are not squeemish, then I recommend you check it out. The movie, of course, had a nice Chinese flavor to it, so it reminded me of a lot of memories from China, most specifically all of the dumpling parties we had.

So, anyways, today was slow. Mike and I did some work with the wiki. It was relaxing to do a little web programming as well as make some animated GIFs. It gave me a chance to get into a sort of hibernative state as I worked. I hope today goes well also. I don't see why it wouldn't. We might go surfing in the afternoon.

As Independence Approaches

So it has been a little while since I have blogged. Well, maybe not, but it seems like ages. Life down here in San Clemente is nice. The weather is getting nicer and even warmer. My coworkers and I go running everyday at lunch, so my fitness level has increased and I have had more energy, which is nice.

Work is going well. Some people will be leaving work because their contracts are up. There will have to be a lot of changes made because of these people leaving, but I think we will be able to manage. Animation ended last week, so the second floor of building 204 is pretty empty, but as people are getting shifted around and moved into other departments that space is getting filled up. The TD department will soon be moved into the MOCAP stage. I think that will be a really cool place to work. We will have to be careful that we don't knock any cameras over. What I am really hoping for is some time to play with the cameras ourselves.

Last weekend I took another trip to Joshua Tree. The first time was pretty spontaneous, so there was not a lot of time to prepare and I didn't plan on spending the night, so I went by myself. The following Monday Helge saw the photo I took from Joshua Tree on my desktop. I felt bad because He, Adam and I were planning on going another day, but we didn't. So I planned another trip to go, this time we would spend a night. It was a really fun trip. We spent the first day climbing around the rocks. Graham was pretty crazy and followed me up most of the routes I went up. I was all ready with my climbing shoes and chalk and he was wearing a long sleeve shirt and some old sneakers. I couldn't believe he actually followed my up a lot of the routes I was going.

After we climbed around the rocks for a while we went back into town bought some firewood and then had dinner. After dinner we headed back to Ryan Mountain Campground. Once we got there we started off our hike to watch the sun set. We climbed up a rock formation at one end of the valley, so we had a sweet view from where we were sitting.

After watching the sunset we set up the camp and got a fire going. Then it was time to sit around and relax. I distinctly remember people saying things about "querying the fire for logs with the latest modified date" to find the last log put in. I think some people have what they call in Chinese a 职业病 (zhiyebing) ... an occupational disease. After sitting around the fire it was time to head to bed. Adam, Helge and I shared his tent, but Aaron and Graham were crazy enough to climb on some of the rocks in the camp and sleep on them. Those nutty guys were up there all night. Luckily none of the lizards or snakes came out to eat their faces off. The weather was nice enough
